We collect the following types of information when you use BarChamp:
• Account information: name, email address, law school, expected exam date, and jurisdiction
• Usage data: practice sessions, scores, time spent studying, flashcard progress, and feature usage
• Payment information: processed securely by Stripe. We do not store credit card numbers or bank account details on our servers.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
• Provide and personalize the bar exam preparation service
• Track your study progress and generate performance analytics
• Generate AI-powered feedback on your written responses
• Improve the platform based on aggregate usage patterns
• Communicate with you about your account, including verification emails and password resets
3. AI-Powered Features
BarChamp uses Anthropic's Claude API to provide AI-powered grading and feedback on written responses. When you submit a writing response for grading:
• Your response text and the associated exam prompt are sent to Anthropic's API for processing
• Anthropic's API data policy guarantees that customer data submitted via the API is NOT used for model training
• Responses are processed in real-time and the AI feedback is stored only in our database for your review
• We do not share your writing responses with any other third party
4. Data Storage & Security
• Data is stored in Neon PostgreSQL with encryption at rest
• Application hosted on Railway with TLS encryption in transit
• Authentication via NextAuth with secure JWT tokens
• Passwords are hashed using bcrypt (never stored in plain text)
• Database access restricted to application service accounts only
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate BarChamp:
• Stripe — payment processing
• Anthropic — AI grading and feedback (Claude API)
• Resend — transactional email delivery
• Railway — application hosting
• Neon — PostgreSQL database hosting
We do not sell or share personal data with advertisers, data brokers, or any parties not listed above.
6. FERPA Compliance
LA Law Institute is committed to protecting student educational records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We will execute Data Processing Agreements with educational institutions upon request. Student performance data is never shared with third parties without explicit consent.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
• Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you
• Request deletion of your account and associated data
• Update your personal information via the Settings page
• Opt out of non-essential communications
